過去完了形は、過去のある時点より前に発生した過去の出来事や状態を表現するために使われます。過去完了形の作り方は、”had + 過去分詞”です。過去完了形でも、経験、継続、完了・結果を表現します。

過去完了形の例文

He had slept from 9p.m. to 5a.m.：彼は夜9時から朝5時まで寝ていました。（継続）

She had already eaten dinner before I arrived.：私が到着する前に、彼女はすでに夕食を食べていました。（完了）

By the end of the last month, he had attended three international conferences.：先月末までに、彼は国際会議に3回参加してます。（経験）

１つ目の例文は、過去のある地点からさらに過去のある地点まで継続していた状態を表現するために使われています。彼が夜9時から5時まで寝ていたという出来事は、特定の過去の時間枠において継続していたことを示しています。２つ目の例文は、私が到着する前に起こった彼女が夕食を食べたという出来事を表現するために使われています。これは、過去の特定の時点よりも前にある出来事が完了したことを示している過去完了形のよく使われる使用例です。3つ目の例文は、過去のある時点（先月末）までに、彼は国際会議に3回参加するという経験を表現しています。※以前に紹介しました大過去は過去完了形のことを言います。
