前置詞＋関係代名詞とは

関係代名詞は、文章内の名詞を修飾するために使われ、名詞節を文章に導入する役割があります。そして、関係代名詞の前に前置詞が置かれる場合があります。例えば、”The person to whom I gave the gift was my best friend.”（私が贈り物を渡した人は私の親友でした。）という文があります。この文は、主節の”The person was my best friend.”（その人は私の親友でした。）と従属節の”I gave the gift to the person.”（私はその男性に贈り物を渡しました。）の文章を関係代名詞で一つの文章にした文です。従属節の”the person”を関係代名詞の”whom”で置き換えた場合に”The person whom I gave the gift to was my best friend.”となりますが、従属節内の”the person”の前に置かれていた前置詞”to”が誰を指しているのか明らかにするために、前置詞のtoを関係代名詞の前に持っていき”The person to whom I gave the gift was my best friend.”と表現することが出来ます。※前置詞の後ろの名詞が関係代名詞にとって代わる場合には、前置詞が前に来ることが出来ると覚えておきましょう

The person to whom I gave my phone number never contacted me.：私が電話番号を教えた人は、私に連絡してこなかった。

I found a book for which I had been searching for months.：私は何ヶ月も探していた本を見つけました。

補足説明

１つ目の例文は、主節の”The person never contacted me.”と従属節の”I gave my phone number to the person.”が関係代名詞によって一つの文にまとめられています。従属節の目的格である”the person”が、関係代名詞の”whom”に変わり、”the person”の前に置かれている前置詞の”to”と共に主節の”The person”の後ろに置かれています。２つ目の例文は、主節の”I found a book.”と従属節の”I had been searching for the book for months.”が関係代名詞によって一つの文にまとめられています。従属節の目的格である”the book”が、関係代名詞の”which”に変わり、”the book”の前に置かれている前置詞の”for”と共に主節の”a book”の後ろに置かれています。
