関係副詞 (Why)とは

関係副詞は、関係代名詞と同様に文章内の名詞を修飾するために使われ、名詞節を文章に導入する役割があります。ただし、従属節の中で前置詞をともない「前置詞＋名詞」で副詞の役割をする場合に、この「前置詞＋名詞」を関係副詞1つで置き換えることができます。例えば、”I don't understand a reason why he left so suddenly.”「彼がなぜ突然去ったのか理解できません。」という文があります。この文は、主節の”I don't understand a reason.”（私は理由が理解できません。）と従属節の”he left so suddenly for the reason.”（彼はその理由で突然去りました。）の文章を関係副詞の”why”で結びつけられています。主節で使われている”a reason”が従属説の中で、前置詞の”for”を伴って使われているので、”for the reason” が関係副詞の "why" に置き換えられ、従属節 ”why he left so suddenly.”を使って主節に組み込むことで、関係副詞の文章を作ります。関係副詞の "why" は、主節の文章内で理由を指す名詞が使われる場合に用いられ、また従属節内で前置詞を伴って副詞としての役割を果たすためにも使用されます。※関係副詞のWhyが使われる場合には、主節の中の”a reason”の部分は省略することが出来ます。上の例では”I don't understand why he left so suddenly.”と言い換えることが出来ます。
