動名詞と不定詞は、名詞の役割を果たしますが、使われる文脈や役割が異なります。この二つの違いの1つ目は、前置詞の後には動名詞しか続かず、不定詞が続くことが出来ません。例えば、She is good at singing.（彼女は歌うのが上手です。）ということはできますが、She is good at to sing.ということは出来ません。また、To不定詞は動詞を修飾する副詞的用法を持っているために、動詞の後に置かれる場合には、『〜するために』と、今より先の将来について表現する場合に用いられる場合がります。そのために、動詞によっては動名詞しか使えない場合や不定詞を使うと意味合いが異なる場合があります。下の例文は、動名詞と不定詞の名詞的用法で意味合いが異なります。
